PVC Exterior Wall Panels in India: West Facing Walls, Monsoon Protection and What to Ask a Supplier

An exterior wall in India has two functions that an interior wall does not. It takes the west sun in April and May and takes a slanted rain in July. An interior pvc sheet is not made for either. Mix up is the cause that some cladding jobs look good at handover and stained or loose by the next monsoon.

Delby’s exterior boards are in the Eclad and Saphhex families, not in the interior PVC panel stack. The site already has a comparison with ACP and stone, and a note on cladding price. This is about the wall itself: which face of the building, what fails, and what to ask before anyone drills.

Interior Sheet and Exterior Board Are Not Substitutes

An interior panel is printed for rooms. The face is not asked to sit at 45 degrees in sun for eight months, then under a driving rain. An exterior cladding board is thicker in the ways that matter for outdoors: the face, the fixing and the joint. If a quote uses the interior sheet rate on a boundary wall it is the wrong quote, even if the colour matches the sample.

Waterproof exterior wall panels is a phrase people search. Water-shedding is the fair claim. No panel is a roof. Water that sits in a joint will find the wall. The board has to throw off water, and the joint has to give it a path out.

The West Wall Is the Test

In most of north and central India the west face is the one that fades, cups or opens at the joint first. Afternoon sun loads the board, then the evening drop cools it. The cycle, every day from March to June, is harder than a week of rain.

On that face look at the fixing zone, not only the colour. A board fixed tight with no room to move will show it at the screw line. Leave the movement the fitter’s sheet specifies. Do not ‘tighten it so it does not rattle’. A little movement is the design.

Colour choice is practical here. Very dark boards take more heat. They can look sharp on a hotel elevation and still need a fixing plan that expects that heat. Mid tones and woodgrains hide dust from the road better than a pale board on a street that takes truck traffic.

Monsoon Is a Joint Problem

Rain rarely hurts the middle of a board. It hurts the end, the window head, the place a balcony slab meets the cladding. These are the lines to detail before the first board goes up.

A drip edge above a window stops the streak that shows up in every post-monsoon photo. A gap at the bottom, clear of soil and of the planter, stops the board sitting in water. Ground-floor cladding that starts at the mud line wicks dirt and is the first to mark.

In coastal cities the salt is the extra factor. Wash the face a few times a season. A board is not maintenance-free. It is lower maintenance than painted plaster, which is a different sentence.

What to Ask a Supplier in India

Is this board sold as exterior, and which series is it. Eclad and Saphhex are the exterior names on Delby’s catalogue. Ask for the fixing detail, not only the face sample. Ask what happens at an external corner, at a window, and at the bottom edge. Ask who has fitted this series on a west wall, and whether you can see that job in the same weather, not in a mall.

City dealers cover a wide map, from the north to the south. A sample that looked right in a Ludhiana showroom still has to be checked against the building’s own face. Send a photo of the wall with the direction marked. West, south-west or under a chajja are three different exposures.

Where Exterior Panels Earn Their Place

Boundary walls that get repainted every Diwali. Shop elevations that cannot close for a week of plaster. Small hotels that want a stone look without the stone weight on an old slab. Farmhouses where the contractor is tired of patching external paint after every rain.

They are a poor fit on a wall that is still moving, on a parapet with no drip, and on any surface where the client wants to stick the board with a bead of adhesive and no mechanical fixing. Exterior work is a fixing job. The board is only half of it.

ACP, Stone and the Honest Middle

ACP is a known commercial face. Stone is heavy and needs a wall that can take it. A pvc exterior panel sits in the middle: lighter than stone, usually simpler to handle on a low-rise, and not the same system as a high-rise ACP cassette. The earlier comparison on the site goes into that. The site decision is still the wall in front of you. A two-storey house and a glass tower are not the same specification.

After It Is Up

Walk the job after the first heavy rain, not only on handover day. Look at window heads and the bottom edge. A stain that appears then is a detail and it is cheaper to correct in the first month. Wash dust off before it bakes on. Do not use a solvent wash.

PVC exterior wall panels in India work when the board is an exterior board, the west face is fixed for movement, and the monsoon joints are drawn before anyone starts. They disappoint when an interior sheet is asked to do an outdoor job. Specify the series, walk the wall, and treat the joint as part of the product.

Can I use an interior sheet of PVC on an outside wall?

No, a bedroom sheet will not withstand west sun and July rain. The exterior work is an Eclad or Saphhex board with a proper fixing and joint.

Which face fails first?

The west one, which is heated up every afternoon from March to June, and then cooled. Let the fixed face on the west move a little. Do not overtighten it.

Where do marks occur from the rain?

At the head of the window, the outside corner, and the bottom edge. Not the middle of the board. A drip above the window and a gap off the soil prevent most of them.

Are the panels used for the exterior waterproof?

They throw off the water if the joint allows it a way out. They are not a roof, and it will find the wall if it can.

What should I send to the dealer before ordering?

A picture of the wall showing the direction. West, south-west and under a chajja are all different. Ask for the fixing detail, not only the colour sample.

When should I check a new elevation?

After the first big rain. Above the windows and at the bottom. A small correction is cheaper than a winter’s worth of marks.
